Key Enabling Technologies (KETs) refer to knowledge-intensive technologies associated with high levels of research and development, rapid innovation cycles, significant capital intensity, and a reliance on a highly skilled workforce.

These technologies are vital because they serve as catalysts for innovation across a wide spectrum of industries. They drive the creation of new products, the enhancement of manufacturing processes, digitalization, automation, material efficiency, improved energy performance, and the development of entirely novel technological solutions.

According to the EU, Key Enabling Technologies include:

  • microelectronics and nanoelectronics,
  • nanotechnology,
  • industrial biotechnology,
  • advanced materials,
  • photonics and advanced manufacturing technologies.

In more recent European policy contexts, these areas are frequently expanded to encompass technologies related to artificial intelligence, connectivity, security, and technological sovereignty.

KETs play a particularly important role in projects centered on research, development, innovation, digitalization, production modernization, or the deployment of advanced technologies. Projects that incorporate KETs can effectively demonstrate a higher technological standard, strong innovation potential, and a broader contribution to the overall competitiveness of an enterprise or entire industrial sector.
