Overview of the LIFE Programme

The LIFE Programme is a directly managed subsidy scheme of the European Union aimed at supporting projects focused on protecting and improving the environment, nature, and climate. It offers grants for innovative solutions that deliver a major positive impact on environmental sustainability throughout Europe.

Budget and Key Areas of Support

For the 2021–2027 programming period, the total allocated budget is €5.4 billion. Project co-financing rates typically range between 60% and 75%. Financial backing is available across the following thematic areas:

Nature and Biodiversity

Aimed at protecting threatened species and habitats, as well as enhancing ecological conditions.

Circular Economy and Quality of Life

Focuses on effective waste management to improve environmental quality—including air, water, and soil—and to safeguard human health.

Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation

Strives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and strengthen resilience against climate change impacts.

Clean Energy Transition

Promotes energy efficiency, renewable energy sources, and measures to combat energy poverty.

Ineligible Activities

The programme is not intended to finance:

• Infrastructure investments for technical environmental protection,
• Operational costs of technical infrastructure,
• Purely research-based projects eligible for funding under other schemes (such as Horizon Europe).
