Industrial research consists of systematic investigation aimed at acquiring new knowledge and skills that serve as a foundation for developing new or substantially improved products, processes, or services. It does not involve creating the final market-ready product itself, but rather exploring and evaluating principles, algorithms, architectures, or methodologies that can later be applied in practice.

Unlike basic research, it is more focused on technological principles and general understanding that will subsequently find practical application.

Key outputs of industrial research:

  • New theoretical knowledge,
  • proposed algorithms, methods, and technological frameworks,
  • feasibility studies and analytical prototypes.

This stage does not yet cover the creation of a commercial end-product — it is aimed at validating options and identifying the most suitable technical solutions.

Practical examples (particularly in the IT industry):

  • Researching a novel algorithm for machine learning or big data processing,
  • designing an innovative software system architecture to boost scalability and security.

Industrial research is frequently supported by public grants, which help lower financial risks in the earlier phases of the innovation cycle.
