The European Urban Initiative (EUI) is an initiative of the European Commission focused on sustainable urban development. Implemented during the programming period 2021–2027, it is financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). Cities can receive support for innovative actions, capacity building and knowledge creation, and development support aimed at resolving their most pressing challenges, including climate change.

Main Components of the EUI

The European Urban Initiative focuses on two primary areas:

• Innovative actions – financing areas such as the circular economy, energy transition, and sustainable mobility.
• Capacity building and knowledge – exchange of best practices and expert assistance for cities during the design and implementation of development strategies.
