Between 2015 and 2020, the European Fund for Strategic Investments (EFSI) functioned as a key financial instrument of the European Union designed to mobilize private capital in strategic sectors. Every euro committed through this fund generated 15 euros in total investment throughout the EU. Building on EFSI's success, the new long-term InvestEU program was launched in 2022.
Key Areas of Support under EFSI
The primary role of the European Fund for Strategic Investments was to back projects in crucial areas where market financing alone fell short, specifically:
- infrastructure, including the energy sector,
- education, research, development, and innovation,
- enhancing access to funding for small and medium-sized enterprises.
