The European Defence Industry Programme (EDIP) is an EU financial instrument with a budget of approximately €1.5 billion provided as grants for the 2025–2027 period. It is designed to strengthen the European defence industry, foster inter-state cooperation, and ensure adequate production and availability of military equipment, thereby enhancing overall security across Europe.
What is the purpose of EDIP?
The EDIP programme serves several core functions:
- Strengthens defence manufacturing capacity within Europe.
- Supports joint procurement of military equipment among EU member states.
- Guarantees the availability and supply of defence products, even in times of crisis.
- Promotes cooperation between countries and enterprises (including Ukraine).
- Increases the competitiveness of the European defence sector.
The objective is to enable Europe to manufacture defence material faster, more effectively, and with reduced strategic dependency on suppliers from outside the EU.
This initiative implements a range of measures proposed under the European Defence Industrial Strategy (EDIS), introduced in March 2024 by the European Commission.
